One of the more commonly discussed details of vintage Rolex © and Tudor © dials is the “underline” marking – a small horizontal line which can be found above or below the hands, near the text of certain dials from the mid-1960s. Theories about “underline dials” range from the plausible to the absurd, and although Rolex has yet to provide an official explanation, a general consensus exists (supported by some evidence from measured radiation levels) about the meaning of the underline marking. While it is likely that the underline marking on vintage Rolex © and Tudor © dials is no more than a tiny horizontal line that was used as an internal record to designate the type of radioactive luminous material that had been used on the hour markers.

Needless to say, this particular detail makes the watches that feature it highly valuable for collectors.

Uno degli argomenti più discussi riguardo a Rolex © e Tudor ©  vintage è il quadrante "underline" Si tratta di una piccola linea orizzontale che si trova vicino al testo di alcuni quadranti risalenti alla metà degli anni '60. Le teorie riguardanti i “quadranti underline” spaziano dal plausibile all’assurdo e sebbene Rolex non abbia ancora fornito una spiegazione ufficiale, esiste un consenso generale sul significato di questo particolare. È probabile infatti che sui quadranti vintage di Rolex © e Tudor © sia stata inserita una piccola linea orizzontale come riferimento interno alla casa madre per indicare il tipo di materiale luminoso radioattivo, utilizzato appunto su questi quadranti.

Inutile dire che il particolare rende gli orologi che ne sono dotati di un raro valore collezionistico.
